Finn-Wall Specialties Celebrates Construction Milestone with Completion of Eccles Theater Flooring Project

Twelve thousand square feet of terrazzo will be showpiece at Utah’s new home for performing arts

Midvale, UTAH – October 20, 2016 – Finn-Wall Specialties, Inc. (Finn-Wall) – a recognized leader in the installation of terrazzo, seamless epoxy/polymer flooring, polished concrete, and high end sealers – announced today the completion of the terrazzo flooring public art project at the newly unveiled George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Theater in downtown Salt Lake City

“This project was the culmination of countless hours of hard work and is truly a testament to the dedication and expertise of the Finn-Wall family,” said company president, Adam Stettler.  “This beautiful new theater will serve as the cultural heart of our state’s capital and I’m so proud that we will forever be an integral part of it.”

Construction on the floor, which includes a 127-by-35-foot entryway, 1,000-by-26-foot lobby and 18 flights of pre-cast terrazzo stairs, began in January of 2016 and took a total of nine months to complete.  Throughout the installation process, Finn-Wall worked hand-in-hand with Utah-based artist Laura Sharp Wilson in the creation of the floor, an art piece titled Thread, Trail, Rope and Yarn – an homage to the early pioneers who settled Salt Lake City and the tools they used to “make Utah and Salt Lake what it is.”
“My designs for the flooring project were inspired by the landscape of Utah and history of the Salt Lake valley,” said Wilson.  “The overriding theme is weaving and threads relating to Native American rug making and the cloth woven by pioneers settling in the valley.

To achieve the unique colors of the floor – “dusty muted tones of purple, green, khaki and grey,” which Wilson explains were inspired by Utah’s natural colors – a unique mixture of aggregates were used, including mother-of-pearl, crushed recycled glass and other mineral aggregates, separated by thin waterjet-cut strips of zinc metal.

“This floor truly is a work of art and will welcome visitors for generations to come,” said Stettler.  “I hope others will draw as much inspiration from it as we have.”

The $119 million Eccles Theater opened to the public on Friday, October 21, where the floor will be on full display.
